We built Vision Combine to make visual performance measurement part of the team’s routine. A fastball reaches the plate in less than half a second. In that brief window, a hitter must pick up the ball, interpret its movement, and decide whether to swing. The demands on vision go far beyond reading a stationary letter chart. Vision Combine measures the key visual skills that support the demands of competitive sport.
We built Vision Combine to address a gap in sports assessment: bringing greater attention to the visual skills athletes rely on during competition. We bring a scientific perspective to understanding vision in sport.

Executive Team
Our team brings together expertise in optometry, vision research and technology.
Dr. Robert J. Steinmetz
Dr. Robert Steinmetz brings expertise in optometry, entrepreneurship, and sports vision research to Vision Combine. He also serves as CEO of Union Eyes and co-founder and principal of iCare Advisors.
His research interests center on visual function and ocular health in athletes, including work involving professional boxers and NFL players. He brings this perspective to understanding the role of vision in sport, alongside a personal connection to baseball as the father of two sons who play competitively.
Dr. Steinmetz graduated cum laude from both the University of Notre Dame and the Illinois College of Optometry. A Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and former Illinois College of Optometry trustee, he was named Illinois Young Optometrist of the Year in 2006 and Illinois Optometrist of the Year in 2015.
Dan Greff
Dan brings more than 25 years of software engineering and technology leadership experience to Vision Combine, his third startup. His previous companies, Cloudmasons and Olono, were acquired by SailPoint and InsightSquared, respectively. He has also led engineering teams through three additional acquisitions and is the co-inventor of two patents.
His experience spans building and operating distributed systems across open source, SaaS, big data, machine learning, and agentic AI. At Vision Combine, he combines this technical background with a firsthand understanding of competitive athletics.
A former Division I athlete in football and track and field at the University of Notre Dame, Dan earned his B.S. in Computer Science there and holds an M.S. in Technology Commercialization from the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Danielle Leong
Dr. Danielle Leong brings experience as an optometrist, vision scientist, and scientific executive to Vision Combine. She leads research and development, working closely with the product team to bring scientific rigor to practical tools for understanding visual performance.
Her doctoral research examined structural and functional measures of vision in professional contact sport athletes, exploring the retina as an accessible window into neural health. At Vision Combine, she combines this background in athlete research with scientific leadership and product development to make visual performance insights accessible and meaningful for athletes and teams.
Dr. Leong completed her undergraduate education at the University of Washington, earned her OD summa cum laude from the Southern California College of Optometry, and completed a residency in Primary Care and Ocular Disease at the Illinois College of Optometry. She earned her PhD in Biomedicine, magna cum laude from Salus University.
Our Story
Competitive athletes expect a great deal from their vision. Picking up a pitch, distinguishing subtle details, and following fast-moving action are part of the game. We created Vision Combine because we saw a need for practical tools that give these visual skills more attention in sports.
Our team brings together experience in vision science, research with professional athletes, and technology development. Vision Combine tests sport-specific visual skills all in one platform, with player scores and team insights in one place. The idea is simple: meaningful understanding starts with measurement.
Our goal is to make visual skills part of the conversation about athletic development.
