Built by optometrists.
For players who want to see the game differently.
Vision Combine was started by two optometrists and a technology founder who couldn't find a credible way to bring professional-grade vision screening into the programs that need it most.
Measure, Don't Guess
You cannot change what you do not measure. Every protocol we ship is validated against peer-reviewed research and benchmarked against the standards elite baseball demands.
Screen, Then Refer
Coaches are the closest thing to every player in the program. Optometrists are the ones who can actually treat what's wrong. Our job is to build the connection between them.
Clinically Honest
Everything we claim is sourced. We don't invent stats, and we don't oversell a screening tool as a training program. The science is the marketing.
Founders
Two optometrists and a CTO who think baseball programs deserve clinical-grade vision screening without a clinic visit.
Dr. Robert J. Steinmetz
Clinical optometrist and Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. Author of the research thesis that Vision Combine is built on, and the clinical lead behind the screening protocols and benchmarking against elite baseball standards.
Dr. Eric Baas
Dr. Eric Baas served as the team optometrist for the UIC Flames, where he worked closely with Division I athletes to optimize visual performance at the highest level. His experience in sports vision care shapes his approach to optometry and business—focused on precision, preparation, and results. Dr. Baas brings that same high-performance mindset to his work today, helping optometrists successfully launch and grow private practices. He is also an Assistant Professor at the Illinois College of Optometry where he teaches practice management.
Dan Greff
Engineering leader and architect with 25+ years building enterprise-scale secure platforms. Dan has previously founded and scaled two companies through acquisition. At Vision Combine, he applies his deep hands-on experience architecting agentic AI systems and ML-driven products to our mobile and cloud-native platforms.
Our Story
Vision Combine started with a question from Dr. Steinmetz's clinical practice: why are coaches the last ones to know that a kid can't see? Baseball rewards visual ability more than almost any other sport — 81% of major leaguers see 20/15 or better, and the average is 20/13 — but no program at the college or youth level had a credible, repeatable way to screen for it.
The answer wasn't another training app. It was a measurement layer: on-field screening that a coach could run in ten minutes per player, with results calibrated against the standards of elite baseball and flagged for referral to a real optometrist when something was wrong. A clinical workflow, delivered through a phone and an iPad.
That's what we've built. We're piloting it with programs that take their players' development seriously — and partnering with sports-vision optometrists who can deliver the professional care the screening flags.
Careers
We're a small team focused on piloting the platform with early programs. No open roles at the moment — but we'll be hiring as we scale. If you're a sports-vision optometrist, an iOS engineer, or someone with a background in baseball performance science who wants to keep in touch, reach out.

Pilot Program
We're onboarding a limited number of college, high school, and travel-ball programs into our 2026 pilot. If you're a coach, program director, or optometrist who wants in, email us and we'll walk you through the details.
